Mary's Teaching Styles

​ACRO

Acrobatics teaches flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline & concentration. This class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique. Students will learn such things as headstands, handstands, elbow stands, cartwheels, back bends, walkovers, & contortion tricks. Acro is not the typical tumbling or gymnastics class. This class is great for students looking to enhance their agility, flexibility, & strength.

Jumps, Leaps, & Turns

This is a class designed specifically for the serious dancer who wishes to perfect and refine their skills of turning, jumping, and leaping. These classes are taught with an emphasis on technique and correct body placement. They are taught in a progressive manner beginning with the basics and advancing to high level skills and combinations of those skills.

Contemporary

Dancers will learn to express themselves through song lyrics and improve their musicality while blending ballet technique with the style of jazz. Students are highly encouraged or required (depending on studio) to take a ballet and or jazz class in addition to this class.

Hip-Hop

Street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

Stretch & Strengthen

Stretch and Strength classes focus on flexibility of all limbs of the body. In this class, dancers learn how to lengthen their legs, arms and feet, creating beautiful bodylines. It will increase the individual dancers’ turnout, flexibility, and arm placements. Mary's Stretch and Strength class caters to beginners through the professional level.

 

Jazz

Jazz dance has a firm technique and strength base, allowing for individualized movement. Jazz is a great form of dance for any age, developing strength and flexibility. Students of jazz are strongly encouraged to study ballet simultaneously for the best possible jazz dance experience.

Ballet

The base of all forms of dance, Ballet technique consists of stylized and controlled movements and positions, which develops ultimate strength and flexibility. Ballet is beneficial at any age, and is a safe form of exercise and building strength. It is strongly encourage all students to enroll in more than one form of dance to study ballet, as the technique is found in every dance class.

 

Musical Theatre

Musical Theater combines jazz technique with other varieties to create a “Broadway” style of dance. This class will follow a jazz warm up and will have progressions and center floor work and combinations that combine acting with jazz and tap dance.
